model-trains1Collecting Model Trains can become an expensive hobby quickly as the enthusiast finds trains that he or she favors.  As your collection grows, proper care becomes more and more important as pieces in your collection become more valuable.

Over the life of your collection, you will find that taking proper care of your model train will save you a significant amount of money for repairs and maintenance in the future.

Here are a few simple tips that will help you preserve your model train collection and allow future generations to enjoy it as much as you do.

  • Store the model train in a safe place while not in use. Storage should be free of excessive moisture, heat and cold.
  • Always use a dry soft cloth or sponge to wipe dust and dirt off the model train when putting away.  This will help prevent accumulation of dust and dirt, which could potentially damage the train over time.
  • If your train has batteries, remove them before putting it away for storage.  Batteries can leak acid and damage the model train.
  • Let the model train run on its own power.  Do not touch it when it is operating. Doing so can often cause damage to the engine.
